A Hand UP– Not a Handout!
Unemployment, health problems, homelessness, financial setbacks and other unexpected circumstances can make a person feel powerless and alone. HandUP Foundation is here to help our neighbors survive the crisis and work toward long term solutions that will change challenging circumstances permanently. We believe in the whole person approach. Each applicant agrees to a personalized plan creating a partnership that keeps the responsibility of life change in the hands of the person in need. We care and we're here to help!
ELIGIBILITY
When you apply for assistance of any kind at HandUP, we will ask you to share your circumstances with us. What crisis are you facing? How did it come about? What other help have you looked for? Do you have a way to get back on your feet after we help? This information will help us create a partnership with you and others in the community that will lead to your independence and success. We know you can do it ~ with a little help along the way.
PROCESS
Pick up a HandUP Assistance Program application at the HandUP office or download one here: English / Spanish. Fill it out, collect all the required documents, and return it to the office in person. (If you need help filling out the application, we'll help with that too). When you bring back the application, a staff member will meet with you for a brief interview and review of your application to make sure it is complete. When it is complete, we will work with you to create a personalized plan that helps you in the best way we can! [Please note: HANDUP SERVES OUR NEIGHBORS WITHIN A 50 MILE RADIUS OF MILTON, PA. ONLY.
The length of time it takes to get approval of our assistance programs depends on the type of assistance requested. If you need emergency food, clothing, furniture, or transportation - and you are available to get started earning your assistance credits right away - we may be able to meet your need the same day. If you are requesting financial assistance for rent, utilities or a vehicle, we will give you an initial approval or denial within five business days of your completed application and interview*, but the process takes longer.
HandUP is not able to provide financial assistance for bills without the required application process.
Personalized plans involve your active participation, usually through earning assistance credits. You may earn the credits on a HandUP work assignment yourself or have someone else work in your place and give you the credit. All volunteers that are helping to earn credits must be at least 16 years old.

Assistance awards are limited to a total value of not more than $300 per family per year. If your need is greater than this amount, we will work with you to find additional resources through other means or agencies.
- security deposits
- rent within the first three months of residence- even after 3 months, must be extenuating circumstances
- furniture or beds within the first three months of residence
- refrigerators or stoves for rented apartments
- Payment plans or partial payments of any kind

* Acceptance for assistance is dependent upon financial availability from HandUP.
